Biodynamic Preparations
Biodynamic preparations are a set of herbal, mineral, and animal-based substances used in biodynamic agriculture and gardening. They are used to enhance soil fertility, stimulate plant growth, and promote overall ecological balance in the farming or gardening system.
There are nine biodynamic preparations, which are classified into two categories: compost preparations and spray preparations. To learn more about each preparation, please read our helpful BD Preparation Guide.

About Jen Lyons
With a Master of Science in Ecology and Environmental Management, Jen Lyons brings over 24 years of experience in organic and biodynamic farming and gardening. Her journey began with a traineeship at the historic Audley End Victorian Kitchen Garden in the UK, followed by roles with leading organisations such as Weleda New Zealand, Seresin Estate, and Hohepa in Hawke’s Bay – where she was mentored in biodynamic preparation-making by Chris Hull.
Jen holds a certificate in Applied Organics and Biodynamics, has worked as a Demeter certification inspector, and has tutored students at Taruna College. Her leadership has helped establish productive kitchen and market gardens at Millbrook Resort and Royalburn Station. Deeply committed to regenerative practices, Jen is passionate about growing nutrient-dense produce, mentoring the next generation of gardeners, and being a dedicated guardian of the land.
Since joining Craggy Range in 2022 as Head Gardener, Jen has led the development of our Kitchen Garden at Giants Winery, applying biodynamic principles from the outset. Now in its third season of production, the garden plays a vital role in supplying the restaurant with fresh, flavourful, nutrient-rich produce. Under Jen’s guidance, there has been particular success in the greenhouse – where this approach brings natural balance and resilience in managing pests and disease. Her work reflects our broader vision – to work in harmony with nature, enhance soil health, and create a more self-sustaining food system.
With a close collaboration between garden and kitchen, and a shared commitment to quality and provenance, Jen’s leadership supports Craggy Range’s holistic approach to sustainability and our 2030 environmental goals.
Craggy Range is a family-owned winery nestled beneath the majestic Te Mata Peak in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Founded by Terry and Mary Peabody in 1998, their vision to create a world-class winery led them to the distinctive terroir and landscapes of New Zealand. Committed to safeguarding their legacy, the Peabodys established a 1,000-year trust, ensuring the winery’s continuity for future generations to come.
The Future of Biodynamics at Craggy Range
Biodynamics will continue to play an integral role in how we nurture and respect the land, supported wholeheartedly by the Peabody family and aligned with our 2030 sustainability goals. The biodynamic calendar provides structure and rhythm to the work, guiding planting, preparation, and harvest with mindfulness and intention.
To support the Biodynamic Association, Jen leads the seasonal prep-making events at Giants Estate, which not only fosters a wonderful community connection but also a generous sharing of knowledge. The preparations are used in our kitchen gardens and vineyards, and also within the wider Biodynamic community right across New Zealand.
Looking ahead, Jen’s vision includes increasing the garden’s contribution to our menus, continuing to work towards utilising our resources to minimise waste and passing on knowledge to the next generation.
