Here at Biodynamics New Zealand, we have a massive range of educational resources and support, to help lessen the overwhelm and get you started on your biodynamic journey.
So, what IS biodynamics?
Biodynamics is an approach to agriculture and gardening that views the farm or garden as a self-contained organism. It is based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and emphasises the interconnectedness of soil, plants, animals, and cosmic forces.
Biodynamic practitioners strive to create a harmonious and balanced ecosystem by integrating organic farming practices, composting, crop rotation, and the use of biodynamic preparations. These preparations, made from natural substances, are applied in small amounts to enhance soil fertility, stimulate plant growth, and promote ecological balance.
Biodynamics also incorporates lunar and astrological influences in timing planting and harvesting activities.
The goal of biodynamics is to cultivate healthy, vibrant ecosystems that produce nutritious food, while respecting the environment and maintaining the long-term sustainability of the land.
Where to start?
A great place to start is by watching the free ‘Introduction to Biodynamics‘ video (below) with Su Hoskin. This video aims to give you a great overview on where biodynamics came from and some of the basic practical applications.
Introduction to Biodynamics with Su Hoskin
A big part of using the biodynamic method for farming or gardening is the application of the nine biodynamic preparations.
To help you with learning about each of the biodynamic preparations (what they are, how to use them and where you can purchase them), we have curated a whole helpful section of the website where you can dive straight into learning more.
